Growth and
Emotional development
The Bridge Series Description:
In a career spanning twenty five years of treating both adults and children, Miriam Ahuva Schecter has gained prominence for her use of Sandtray and Intuitive Art techniques. During her tenure of utilizing these therapies, she developed an original and innovative method called “The Bridge Method”. In this groundbreaking method she fused the two modalities of Sandtray and Intuitive Art, creating a process that deepens the healing process for all clients irrespective of age or diagnosis. This methodology has been used successfully to regulate the client when they are overwhelmed by their emotions and for healing from past traumas. The method quickly deepens their awareness of their issues and fosters expression of their emotions. In addition, this method has proven to be an excellent tool for clinicians to chart their client’s progress and re-evaluate future treatment goals.
The Bridge technique is a multi-arts approach in which different art modalities are woven into the therapeutic process tailored to each client's unique situation. The method begins with an objective or an intention that the therapist or the client desires to reach. That objective is then initiated with a guided imagery to help the client reveal the colors connected to that experience and unlock suppressed thoughts and feelings. The client is then guided to build a mini sand world using those colors that came up in their guided imagery. The sand world helps heighten the clients awareness and provides a structure on which to build additional levels of awareness. Once the client has processed their sand world the intuitive art piece is presented to further explore more truths and clarity. This three fold method has seen remarkable effectiveness due to its clear structure that is both comforting to the client and the therapist. Within a few sessions using the bridge method clients have reported break throughs in their healing process after many months of traditional talk therapy.
Students of this method will attend experiential intensive classes with lecture and hands-on intermodal of the three major art disciplines: Watercolor, Acrylic and Stained Glass. The classes are versatile, using a combination of lectures, case studies, slide shows, discussions, group exercises, and Q&A sessions to give students ample exposure to this new method. Classes include group processing time to allow students to share with the group the healing and transformation brought forth in their art work as well as witness their peers art work.
This series can enhance the skills of both the experienced Sandtray and Art Therapist as well as Therapists who are new to these modalities and interested in Expressive Arts. No previous experience in watercolor, acrylic or stained glass is necessary.
Part 1: Creating a safe haven using watercolor:
The students will be introduced to both Sandtray and Intuitive Art. They will then have an experiential exercise using all three steps: guided imagery, Sandtray, and Intuitive Art, using the medium of Watercolor. The Therapist will learn how to use Intuitive Art in a directive and psychoanalytical manner.
Students will learn how to create the space for this method and get a detailed list of the supplies needed.
The Therapist will be able to immediately implement this method and see results after this workshop.
Part 2: Deepening using Acrylic paint:
The students will further their knowledge on Intuitive Art, using Acrylic paints. They will experience the importance of letting go and allowing ones inner voice and intuition to come to the surface. They will learn how to use this method for deepening the clients emotions and understanding of their inner worlds, as well as healing the inner child. The students will learn how to use Intuitive Art in a non-directive approach with little or no interpretation and analyzation but for the healing experience of the art process alone.
Students will be able to implement this method with their clients and see results.
Part 3: Healing and transforming using stained glass mosaics:
This workshop uses the healing process of braking glass and then intuitively selecting the pieces and forming an abstract glass mosaic using glass on glass technique. The students will experience the healing that happens when destroying and shattering the glass as an analogy of the clients trauma and emotional break down. The students will then experience the healing process of pulling together the brokenness and creating a glass mosaic both as an analogy to the rebuilding stage of therapy as well as learning that brokenness has meaning and a purpose and a unique beauty portrayed in their glass mosaic. The glass on glass technique is used to allow the light to penetrate and bring out the beauty of the stained glass pieces. This too is an analogy of the transformation and transparency that comes from going through the darkness and the pain.
The Therapist will be taught how to break glass and cut glass and create a stained glass collection to be used for the glass mosaic art work. They will then learn how to intuitively pick the pieces and colors and form their mosaic art piece. The Therapist will learn how to glue the glass on glass as well as grout and seal their art work.
The Students will be able to implement this method with their clients and see results.
Objectives:
1. Describe the three fold stages of the B.R.I.D.G.E. method and explain how it is used to achieve therapeutic goals in therapy.
2. Demonstrate the process for creating a safe haven using watercolors.
3. Demonstrate the developmental stages using acrylic paints to slowly build the clients ego-strength in learning how to surrender and let go of their control.
4. Demonstrate setting up a mini stained glass center to be used as another medium for intuitive art expression in the B.R.I.D.G.E. method.
5. Discuss cultural implications with the B.R.I.D.G.E. method.
